How to Run Descriptive Statistics in SPSS

  • spss4Unfortunately, there is no nice way on how to write a descriptive analysis but the best way in writing descriptive statistics is to be direct. If you are going to cite several statistics with the same topic, it is better when you include them in the same section or paragraph.

If you have many statistics to report, it is better when you present them in tables or any other visual forms. If you present statistics on data set, you need to include about the standard deviation and mean. This is the minimum information to be put and for additional information, it’s entirely up to you.

How to Run Descriptive Statistics in SPSS

Each SPSS command must be ended by delimiter. In producing results such as number of cases, mean, maximum, minimum, use the command descriptive.

SPSS reminder: To run descriptive, use the descriptive variables = < variable list>.

Unlike the mean, the median can’t produced by descriptive command wherein you need to use the frequencies command at the same time specifying option statistics=median.

Note: In running frequencies in continuous variables such as weights, wage, identification of its, you need to make a huge frequency table. It can be avoided through adding a format=notable option to suppress the table.

    Getting Descriptive Statistics

    • For frequency: Use frequencies mean, click options button to select the statistics you need. Click continue and click OK.
    • For separate groups: Use explore, add variables that you like statistics on the Dependent list like weight or height. Add grouping variables to factor list, click plots button and click OK.
    • For two way comparing variables: Use Crosstabs, put all the independent variables like gender as a column. For dependent variables like social interaction as row. Click cells button, select counts and choose observed. Under percentages, select column or row and click continue and OK in running the statistics.

Finally, there are many ways on what you can do in order to run descriptive statistics. You only need to master the steps and know what to click. The time you are familiar with the SPSS, you no longer need to worry because you know what you are doing, you now what to click and much more. Get started with SPSS today!
